A living room is often one of the most utilized rooms in a house. It can be used as a gathering place for youthful hangouts or study sessions. Perhaps your room is used to host monthly group meetings or clubs. Sporting events may be watched regularly from your living room sofa. Maybe your room is the site of regular parties or social gatherings. Whatever the case may be, the living room deserves special attention when it comes to home decorating. This is the space in your home where you reconnect with your family and loved ones.
The feel of a living space in manipulated with the way furniture is placed in it; the way colors are added to it and accents that are used in it. Different design elements can completely transform the look and feel of a living room. Even if your living room is a problem spot in your house, do not despair there are solutions to minimize the things you don’t like and maximize the potential that is there.
If your living room is on the smaller side, make sure you are aware of the furniture pieces you are putting into that room. It is important not to overburden a smaller space with too many pieces of furniture or too large of furniture. The placement of furniture and area rugs in a small space is essential. In order to visually expand the space, keep furniture toward the walls. Clumping furniture too close together, or too near the center of the room, will visibly shrink an already small space.
If you use your living area as a space where you watch television or movies often the placement of the furniture and TV or projector is even more important. Placing the television and seating furniture along opposite walls is often the best and possibly only real solution, proper placement of an area rug will help keep your room from visually shrinking. Place the area rug in front of or underneath the television then place the furniture along the opposite outside edge of the rug. This visually expands your floor space and will keep you from feeling too cramped. If possible, use a round or oval shaped rug to eliminate a boxy feel.
Choosing the right size rug is extremely important in a smaller sized living room. Using too large of a rug will end up seeming like the main flooring, or carpet, in a room. Using too small of a rug can look like an afterthought and unplanned design element. It will not have the right effect on your decorating as a well thought out and planned rug. Essentially you should look for a rug that is large enough to cover the center of the floor, but not too large that all of the furniture along the perimeter of the room rests fully on top of it. If you shift the rug so that it covers more of one side of a room leaving exposed flooring on the other side, you will again visually change the appearance of the size of the room. Small living rooms can be greatly enhanced by choosing and using the right area rugs.
