Depending upon the geographical location of your home building and the face towards which the external wall of your bedroom is, you will receive either plenty or a minimum of natural sunlight into your bedroom. It is naturally assumed that natural sunlight penetrates inside an interior space for about 7 meters (20 feet approx.)
The natural sunlight if harsh and strong will also bring hat with it. To cater with these the proper ventilating outlets above the windows and door openings are normally provided to make a path to escape the hot air, which becomes light in weight and rises above.
However blocking it and crating shadows on plain walls to add extra interest in a bedroom can do creative use of this penetrating light. One of the best things about natural light is because it comes from Sun, it’s position, and angle and intensity will change overtime. The quality of sunlight will always be different at morning, afternoons and evening creating more interesting patterns.
There are many easy ways to “obstruct” the path of natural sunlight that enters in a bedroom. The easiest is to use a curtain with two layers. The first layer is of natural cloth and the second outside layer is a transparent layer that allows the light to enter by filtering it. If this thin cloth is used with intricate embroidery it will caste some great shadows on the plain wall inside, creating patterns.
Another way to obstruct natural sunlight is to use mild steel or wrought iron grill will detailed mesh around the borders. Grill has another purpose of protecting interiors from outside.
One more easy way of obstructing light is to use a stained glass on a window. However using a stained glass on a big window can obstruct light in much more quantity causing darkness inside the room, which we don’t want to happen. That’s why it is a good idea to use a stained glass on slit window. (Vertical window with narrow opening) It can be a non-openable fixed type of window that can create colored light pattern inside the bedroom.
If the bedroom is on the top floor of the house, a great way to add some awesome lighting effect is to use a “domical skylight” with fiber or glass panels. But this can be an expensive approach and must be thought during the design stage itself.
These were just a few thoughts on using natural light in bedroom decorating. I hope this article was informative to you.
